Small features from the ISE we refused to lose
None of these would headline a release. Together they’re most of what made the ISE feel lived-in, so they all came along.
Edit Profile, on the Tools menu, opens your $PROFILE in a tab. If the file doesn’t exist yet, which on a fresh machine it usually doesn’t, it gets created first. “The file does not exist” is a silly wall to hit on your way to adding an alias.
Run as Administrator relaunches elevated through UAC and hands your open documents to the new instance, so fixing one ACL doesn’t cost you your workspace. While elevated, an Administrator badge sits on the status line the whole time. “Wait, am I still admin?” is a question with expensive wrong answers, so the answer stays on screen. If you’re already elevated, the menu item tells you instead of relaunching for nothing.
Zoom: Ctrl with the mouse wheel, Ctrl+plus and Ctrl+minus, Ctrl+0 to snap back. Clamped at both ends so a scroll accident can’t shrink your code to dust. Useful for projectors and for 2 a.m., which are the same situation at different distances.
The window title obeys scripts. Set $Host.UI.RawUI.WindowTitle and the actual title bar changes, which means the old habit of long-running scripts posting progress into the title works. The taskbar tells you how the batch is doing while you’re in another window.
Write-Progress renders as one updating line per activity, with the percentage, and the line resolves when the activity completes. We briefly lived with the alternative, raw progress records scrolling actual output off the screen, and have opinions about it.
Recent Files sits under the File menu, most recent first, length configurable in Settings, hidden entirely when it’s empty.
Ctrl+I jumps focus to the script pane, Ctrl+D to the console. The old keyboard commute between the two places your hands spend the day.
Individually these are shrugs. But a tool you sit in for six hours is mostly made of shrugs, and every one of them that’s missing is a paper cut you pay for daily.
